Yemen Reconstruction Program Boosts Water Sources in Aden and Hadramawt through Renewable Energy

The Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen is actively involved in implementing sustainable developmental projects and initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and basic services in Yemen. The program supports eight vital sectors, including water, through 58 projects and initiatives that have contributed to enhancing water resource management, diversifying water sources, and improving water distribution efficiency in urban and rural areas.

One of the projects under the program is the Renewable Energy Water Security Project in Aden and Hadramout governorates, which supports the water sector in Yemen. This project, in partnership with Sela Development Company, focuses on enhancing water sources in targeted areas by utilizing renewable energy. This approach ensures the sustainability of water resources, reduces operational costs, and enhances the capacity of project personnel in using, operating, and maintaining solar energy systems.

In Aden governorate, the project involves equipping 10 wells in the Ahmed field using renewable energy. This will be achieved by supplying and installing a solar power station with a production capacity of 600 kilowatts, reducing reliance on electricity to operate the wells and lowering the cost of water production unit. Additionally, the project aims to increase water production capacity for the field by 36% and will benefit approximately 800,000 beneficiaries in Aden governorate.

The Water Security Enhancement Project in Hadramout governorate aims to diversify water sources and improve the capacity to meet basic water needs in nine directorates in the coastal and valley regions of Hadramout. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels for operating wells through solar energy systems, the project will directly and indirectly benefit around 1.7 million beneficiaries.

It is worth mentioning that the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen has introduced 264 projects and initiatives across eight essential sectors, including education, health, water, energy, transportation, agriculture, fisheries, capacity development for the Yemeni government, and developmental programs in various Yemeni governorates.
