Saudi Arabia keen to champion just causes

Saudi Arabia emphasized the importance of increasing attention to the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories amid the unfortunate events taking place in Palestine. They called for rejecting any confrontations or attempts to undermine the situation until an independent Palestinian state is established with its capital in East Jerusalem. This statement was made during a speech by Her Excellency the President of the Human Rights Commission, Dr. Hala bint Muzid Al-Tuwaijri, at the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

She highlighted that Saudi Arabia has witnessed numerous reforms and developments in human rights across various levels as part of the “Vision 2030” framework. This vision focuses on principles of human rights, including equality, non-discrimination in the enjoyment of development rights, empowering women, youth, and vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, the elderly, and migrant workers. The vision aims to achieve an ideal quality of life for all, while enhancing the efficiency and capacity of relevant entities to host major global events, prioritizing human rights and the protection of individuals.

The President of the Human Rights Commission explained that Saudi Arabia has worked on developing its legislative system to build a strong legal framework that protects and enhances human rights. Many laws have been amended and enacted, welcoming a diverse community of over 15 million foreigners from more than 60 nationalities, constituting more than 44% of the population. These individuals enjoy their rights without discrimination and with the highest levels of protection.

She also pointed out that Saudi Arabia has spared no effort in promoting international peace and security, guided by its deep-rooted values and commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. This includes supporting just causes and seeking to end crises, such as the Ukrainian crisis, through initiatives like the mediation efforts of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, and Prime Minister, which resulted in the release of several prisoners as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.

Furthermore, she stressed the importance of maintaining strong and cohesive communities worldwide to ensure respect for human rights by addressing harmful practices that affect societies as a whole, such as religious intolerance, hate speech, and the importance of family preservation.

In conclusion, she emphasized that Saudi Arabia is keen on enhancing its close cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms while respecting different values and refraining from seeking to impose selected monolithic values on societies. Instead, recognizing their cultural and civilizational diversity and investing in the protection and promotion of human rights.
