Saudi Arabia Celebrates Green Saudi Initiative Day in Effort to Promote Environmental Work Culture

Saudi Arabia celebrates the second anniversary of the Green Saudi Initiative on the anniversary of the launch by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aiming to unite societal efforts in implementing effective and measurable environmental actions to improve the quality of life in alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 targets.

The Green Saudi Initiative focuses on environmental protection, supporting energy transition efforts, and sustainability programs with three main goals: reducing emissions, planting trees, and protecting the Kingdom’s land and marine areas.

Through this initiative, Saudi Arabia leads environmental work efforts using a comprehensive approach, playing a crucial role in enhancing regional and global cooperation to build a more sustainable future for the world.

Following the campaign to embed the culture of environmental work, Green Saudi Initiative Day emphasizes the importance of collective action among individuals and institutions from various sectors, including government, private, and non-profit sectors, to address urgent environmental challenges.

During March, Saudi society united to demonstrate collective responsibility and play a part in driving sustainable change. In support of these efforts, the Green Saudi Initiative launched two campaigns on social media platforms to raise awareness about adopting sustainable practices and protecting the environment.

On Green Saudi Initiative Day, a digital board will be revealed on the official website to showcase sustainable practices adopted by participants during Ramadan and document their commitment to contributing to a sustainable future.

The second campaign titled “Namoora Challenge for Change” aims to educate youth and children about the importance of simple habits in making tangible changes and encourage them to participate in sustainable practices on social media.

Green Saudi Initiative 2025 follows the momentum witnessed in the capital Riyadh in December, hosting the Green Saudi Initiative forum alongside the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16 Riyadh). The forum served as a vital platform to promote dialogue, exchange views and ideas on addressing environmental challenges, and support green transformation paths with participation from policymakers, business leaders, and experts.

With investments exceeding a total value of 705 billion riyals, the initiative continues to implement over 85 projects across the Kingdom’s 13 regions, making rapid progress towards its main goals. Last year, the Kingdom succeeded in developing and connecting 6.6 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity to the grid, with a total of 44.2 gigawatts currently under development. The liquid fuel displacement program contributes to emission reduction by operating four high-efficiency gas stations with a total capacity of 5.6 gigawatts, aligning with the Kingdom’s ambitions to achieve the optimal energy mix for electricity production by 2030.

Efforts to increase vegetation cover and combat desertification have rehabilitated 118,000 hectares of degraded land, equivalent to planting 115 million trees by the end of 2024. The initiative also succeeded in relocating more than 7,500 threatened fungal species through over 10 breeding and relocation programs including the Arabian Oryx, Arabian Leopard, and Arabian Caracal.

These efforts embody the Kingdom’s commitment to achieving a more sustainable future for future generations, building a thriving and sustainable economy, solidifying its leadership role in the global environmental landscape.
