Uzbekistan’s Healthcare Sector Receives Additional $10 Million in Financial Support

Dr. Mohammed Al-Jasser, the President of the Islamic Development Bank, and Mr. Jamshid Kuchkarov, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, signed an agreement for additional financing of $10 million on the sidelines of the ongoing spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington. This additional funding is part of the original agreement worth $80 million and is expected to support the second phase of the current project to develop cancer treatment services in Uzbekistan. The original project aimed to improve access to high-quality cancer services for the population of Uzbekistan by building, rehabilitating, and equipping 16 cancer centers across the country, establishing specialized cancer units in selected areas, enhancing institutional and human capacity, and updating clinical guidelines and protocols. The overall financial progress of the original project reached 92.10% by the end of 2024.

During the signing ceremony, the President of the Islamic Development Bank described the project as a strategic initiative that plays a pivotal role in enhancing access to high-quality healthcare services for the public in the Central Asian country. He praised the Islamic Development Bank Group as a reliable development partner for the government of Uzbekistan and commended the country’s commitment and cooperation in strengthening the healthcare sector for the benefit of the population.
