Yemen Reconstruction Program Unveils Development Projects to Enhance Operational Capacity of Electricity Sector

Saudi program initiatives in Yemen have greatly improved basic services, education, and healthcare sectors by enhancing energy efficiency and operational capacity. They have also promoted the use of renewable energy across various Yemeni provinces. One such project involved upgrading the electricity supply in healthcare facilities to ensure 100% reliability. This was achieved by implementing independent power generation systems capable of meeting the facilities’ electricity needs, thus ensuring sustainable operations and efficient service delivery.

Additionally, the program supported the energy sector by expanding and rehabilitating the power station in Al Ghaydah district, Al Mahrah governorate. This effort aimed to increase power generation capacities and distribution networks, with the district fully relying on the new power station. The project included civil and electrical works at the Al Ghaydah power generation station, laying medium and low voltage cables for interconnection, fuel network extension, providing 5 transformers with a capacity of 3000 KVA each, and supplying ten power generators with 1 MW capacity each. The project’s goal was to ensure a reliable and sustainable electricity supply in the region.

Other developmental initiatives in the energy sector included establishing an electricity network in Al Ghaydah and upgrading power infrastructure to serve the commercial and residential areas effectively. This involved extending high-voltage networks, providing distribution transformers, and laying electrical cables over a total length of approximately 29 km, along with low-voltage networks extended by about 11 km.

In Hajjah governorate, the program aimed to enhance electricity supply to residential areas and villages to improve reliability. To achieve this, a power generation station was set up in Hadibu district, Socotra, equipped with three generators producing a total of 3.75 MW. Another power station was established in Qulansiyah district, featuring two generators with a combined capacity of 1.46 MW connected to the public electricity grid. Both projects aimed to enhance electricity generation capacities in the governorate, ensuring sustainable and reliable power production, with considerations made for weather resistance such as seasonal hurricanes, and training operators on maintenance operations.

Furthermore, the Saudi program funded projects to illuminate roads and squares with solar energy in various Yemeni provinces. These initiatives aimed to improve urban landscapes and ensure safe transportation for citizens. These energy sector projects are part of a larger initiative comprising 264 projects and initiatives supporting eight vital sectors, including education, health, transportation, water, agriculture, fisheries, and developmental programs, all aimed at enhancing government capacities in different Yemeni provinces.
